From the deepest, darkest depths of BJJ Hell comes the very first White-to-Black Belt BJJ Home Study video course.
Yes... theses are THOSE tapes... the ones that people complained Joe's Brazilian accent is too thick and they couldn't understand him.
Bullocks! I say.
Maybe it's the result of having spent a number of formative years growing up in a country where not everyone spoke English, but personally I don't find him difficult to understand. Is he as clear as Obama speaking from a teleprompter??? NO... but it is understandable AND, more importantly, solid information (and unlike Obama, not verbal fertilizer).
Master Moriera also did something revolutionary at the time, which to be honest I have not seen on any other series (anyone should feel free to correct me). He not only breaks down techniques, but frequently teaches them in combinations, especially on the White-to-Black portion of the series. This is extremely beneficial for the White and Blue belt levels. Another thing somewhat revolutionary at the time was the inclusion of breakfalls early on plus takedowns and throws at all levels (Joe is a Judo BB as well after all).
And by the way, yes...you had to go see him to belt test. No video evaluation, etc. He mentions doing so at the end of some of the tapes. I wonder if the offer still stands....
I ripped these the best I could from 13-year old video tapes (1997). Also keep in mind Panther was NOTORIOUS for selling tapes that were physically not the best quality (rumor had it they even used "previously used" tape stock), so I stopped ever few tapes to disassemble and manually clean the head of my VCR. I also tried to keep the quality-to-size ratio in mind.
These are ripped for use on IPODs, PSPs, and other hand-helds and smartphones that support H.264/mp4 playback. They still look pretty good played full screen on a TV using a WDTV multi-media player. One day I might seed larger, higher quality rips, just don't hold your breath.
Shout out to Pinnacle/AVID for making the Pinnacle Video Transfer device.
++ NOTE: JOMOR-## is the original Panther catalogue designation
